Friend of everyone, an enemy of yourself
Heard these lines from Mike Tyson and thinking about it ever since. [seed idea - Will update as more ideas collate]
I heard this phrase on Instagram reels by Mike Tyson. It is from his podcast "HotBoxin' with Mike"
If you are a friend of everyone, you are an enemy to yourself.
After listening to this, I realized that people who are friends with everyone are the people who are fighting a battle constantly with themselves.
I don't like to be moving around groups of friends. I have different groups of friends like – my school friends, my college friends, and my intern friends, and giving time to all at a time is really hard. Sometimes, I feel like I lose half the time deciding what to do.
Hence, although hard, I only choose to be in touch with a group of friends based on availability and proximity.
I know that this is to some extent rude of me, but I prefer to give all my attention to one set of people at a time rather than giving scattered attention.
And sometimes I do feel bad about it. That is why this line from Mike Tyson caught my attention.
You can't be friends with everyone. You just can't. No matter how many tries you give to make everyone happy. There will be some who will not be happy. It is how life is structured. You can only make a set of people happy, and that is all that should matter to you.
So, please know this if a friend has many groups because as we progress in life, we naturally tend to meet a lot of people and make friends. So, make sure you give and take the freedom to have other friends as well.
If you feel like your friend's presence is necessary please talk to them and have a time scheduled for you to talk and be friends.
I personally ask if we can meet and meet for a while and talk if possible.
